If you're curious about acupuncture but not quite sure what to expect, you're not alone. Here are the questions our patients at Zan Acupuncture Clinic ask most often — and honest answers to help you feel prepared for your first visit.

✨Does acupuncture hurt?

This is, by far, the most common question we get. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin — nothing like the needles used for injections or blood draws. Most people feel nothing or a brief pinch, a tingle, or a dull, heavy sensation when a needle is inserted, and then little to nothing at all. Many patients find the experience relaxing enough to fall asleep during treatment.

✨How many needles will I need, and how deep do they go?

The number of needles varies by treatment plan — anywhere from a handful to twenty or more, depending on what we're addressing. Needles are inserted at varying depths & angles, often just a few millimeters, depending on the point and your body type. We will always explain what to expect before starting.

✨Is it safe? Are the needles sterile?

Yes. At Zan Acupuncture Clinic we only use pre-sterilized, single-use, disposable needles that are thrown away after each treatment — never reused. This is standard practice and required by law in the U.S.

✨What conditions can acupuncture help with?

The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture for over 100 conditions, including pain management, mental health concerns and certain chronic health issues.

At Zan Acupuncture Clinic patients most commonly seek acupuncture for:

  • Chronic pain (back, neck, joint pain)

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Stress, anxiety, and sleep issues

  • Digestive concerns

  • Women’s Health

  • Fertility support

  • Recovery from injury or overuse

Acupuncture is an integrative therapy and is often used alongside conventional medical care, not as a replacement for it.

✨How does acupuncture actually work?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is used to restore the smooth flow of qi (energy) through pathways in the body called meridians and help the body maintain homeostasis. From a Western physiological standpoint, research shows acupuncture may stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which can optimize local circulation and trigger the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body. Acupuncture has also been shown to decrease systemic inflammation and regulate the nervous system.

✨How many sessions will I need before I notice a difference?

This varies widely by person and condition. While the vast majority of people feel a difference after one session; to achieve lasting change a series of 4-6 treatments may be needed. Acute issues (like a recent injury) often respond faster than chronic conditions that have built up over years. We will let you know at your first visit and will typically reassess after the first few visits and adjust your plan as needed.

✨What should I do to prepare for a session?

  • Eat a light meal beforehand

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

  • Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol right before your appointment

✨What should I expect afterward?

Most people feel relaxed, sometimes a little tired, occasionally energized. Staying hydrated afterward and giving yourself some downtime is often recommended.

✨Are there any side effects or risks?

Acupuncture is considered very safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. Minor side effects are not common but can include slight bruising at a needle site, temporary soreness, or lightheadedness. Serious complications are rare. Certain people — such as those with bleeding disorders, pacemakers, or who are pregnant — should let their practitioner know in advance so the treatment plan can be adjusted safely.

✨Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Acupuncture is commonly used during pregnancy to help with nausea, back pain, and stress, but certain points are avoided at certain stages. Always let us know if you're pregnant so we can tailor your treatment appropriately.

✨Will my insurance cover it?

Coverage varies significantly by provider and plan. Some insurance plans cover acupuncture for specific conditions (like chronic pain), while others don't cover it at all. We recommend checking with your insurance provider directly. We don't bill insurance directly but we are happy to give you the documentation (superbill) so you can submit it to your insurance company.

✨How do I know if my acupuncturist is qualified?

Look for a practitioner who is licensed in your state and, in the U.S., certified by the NCBAHM (National Certification Board for Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine). Dr. Yasi Ayat, DACM, L.Ac., is licensed in both Virginia and California. She is also nationally certified by the NCBAHM (National Certification Board for Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine).
